HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED LIFE INSURANCE?

The short (and not very helpful) answer to that question is…it depends. The best type of any insurance is that which most cost-effectively helps you to meet your goals and needs. That’s why here at the John Wickhem Agency we first take the time to learn about you and your insurance needs, then analyze everything from a risk management perspective. Once we understand your risks, we can help design more cost-effective ways to help you manage those risks with life insurance.

The most obvious reason to have life insurance is because someone else – or several someone’s – are dependent on you. That’s not to say single people have no need for life insurance. Nor does that mean “empty nesters” or elderly people can’t benefit from having a well-designed life insurance policy.

Regardless of your age or relationship status, a few of the most common reasons you should consider buying life insurance include the need to:

Provide income | If you or your life partner contributes significantly – or equally – to maintaining your lifestyle, the loss of that income can have major repercussions on your living conditions

Pay off a mortgage or other debt | Making sure you provide a place for dependents to live is often a top priority

Cover a dependent’s expenses | For example, this can be to help pay for college, or provide for a special-needs dependent

Pay for funeral expenses | The most common reason for insurance, final expenses can add up to a large burden

Another key consideration is if you own a business, especially in partnership with someone else. It is common practice (and just common sense) for each business partner to take out an insurance policy on the other partner. The proceeds of each policy will help to buy out the other partner’s share of the business in the event of their untimely demise. This is a good way to assure the business remains a going concern and provides the deceased partner’s family a distributable estate without having to sell the entire business.

TYPES OF LIFE INSURANCE

Broadly speaking, there are three types of life insurance, and the premiums for each depends primarily on the way the final amount of policy payout is determined:

TERM

Provides only insurance coverage
for a specific period of time

WHOLE LIFE

Provides both insurance
coverage for your entire life
and accumulates cash value
to the policyholder

UNIVERSAL WHOLE LIFE

Provides flexible premiums
and policy payout options, and
accumulates cash value to
the policyholder
